How I started a business out of thin air that made money!

So the following was a post I wrote when I left a previous office job and on the drive home I made a business out of thin air.

You see, I used to work as a compliance administrator for a courier service based in Northampton, I liked my job but the management was awful, I left the business because I put someones shoe in a fridge (100% true).

There was this jokey mentality in the office (even among the management and directors) witch I joined in with, and one day my manager told me I had to go.

I freaked out for around 20 minutes, then on the drive home and out of nowhere I took a detour to Primark and bought a blue Polo shirt, then headed to pound land to pick up a bucket and some cloths.

When I got home I played car washing videos on YouTube while ordering business cards ( I still have some), I also set up a Facebook page and browsed images from Unsplash to make an add, this all paid off and I started to get business!

Then I wanted to boost the Instagram account for Speckless, So I set a target: Originally this was for 500 followers but later extended to 1000 witch I achieved.

See as a personal account you want following low and followers high.
With a business account you are trying to get customers. So think of like this:

Every time you follow someone you are giving them a business card.

So make sure they qualify for your service, for example I wouldn’t have any reason to follow someone in Japan because even if they click my profile and want my service I can’t do it.

This may apply to my business, both Speckless and Josh Maddocks Magic but It obviously doesn’t apply to everyone, so if you have t shirt business for example Japan might be the biggest thing for your business.

I also went door-to-door knocking, and the first door, I didn’t even knock on! It opened as my knuckle was about to make contact and the guy opened the door and mistook me for someone else, I told him what I was doing and he said “That sound’s great! Can you do both mine and my wife’s car?”

So I did, with the help from my friend Brad(who has since started his own company), he helped me out on my first day it was a Sunday nearly 2 years ago. The business was successful, with doing magic as a sideline I earned more than my office job and got a nice tan, lots of exercise and got to meet all kinds of people.

I have to be honest I learned the business as I went along, and I loved it.

I still have all the accounts for Speckless, and I had someone interested in working as a franchise in Manchester, but the business model didn’t work when I moved to King’s Lynn. The door-to-door didn’t work because people didn’t trust me?

And I think because it’s the country side people don’t tend to get their cars washed as much here. So now I’m applying all my business knowledge into my main business: Josh Maddocks Magic .

I want to set my goals higher with my magic business, Norfolk has so many wonderful venues and beaches that are absolutely perfect for all kinds of events but mainly weddings! With all the Norfolk brides looking for entertainment, I want to be there to step in.

This could be the best area for people to hire wedding entertainment, so I’m slowing gaining gig’s already and boosting my Instagram, so please feel free to check that out!

Thank you for reading.
